Blackfoot River Fishing Report: 4/12/2022
River Score:
2/5 Poor
The Blackfoot River can be sneaky good in the spring. This is a river that often gets overlooked this time of year because it stays colder for longer due to the fact that it runs through a canyon and does not get as much sunlight this time of year as some of the other rivers. That being said, this is big fish time on the “Big Blackfoot”. We like to throw deep nymph rigs with crayfish patterns, san juan worms, and dead drifted white, black, or olive streamers. Go deep and go heavy. Fish the slow water on inside bends such as the one at Marco Flat or Angevine. If your bobber is moving at a snail’s pace, you are doing it right! The river is still cold and there are still some ice shelves and things like that so be cautious.
Suggested fly patterns -
Size anything san juan worms in pink, red or purple, size 8-10 rubberlegs in black, heavy streamers in white, black, or olive, and size 8-10 zirdle bugs in olive, gray, or natural.
ATTENTION: All residents and non-resident anglers need new fishing licenses as of MARCH, 1ST. Here’s a link to buy them online! https://ols.fwp.mt.gov/
